Live near an MRT? These primary schools may be closer than you think

Published · Updated · Data current to the 2026 Primary 1 results and LTA’s July 2026 station exits

101 of the 179 primary schools that ran Phase 2C in 2026 are within 500m of an MRT or LRT exit, about an 8 to 9 minute walk at adult pace. At 88 schools, every citizen family who applied in Phase 2C got a place, every year from 2022 to 2026. Pick a station or a school to see the stops and the walk.

  • Most schools are near an exit. 101 of 179 schools are within 500m of an MRT or LRT exit, and 164 are within 1km.
  • At 88 schools, every citizen family who applied in Phase 2C got a place, every year from 2022 to 2026. Where they lived didn’t matter. 45 of these schools are within 500m of an MRT or LRT exit.
  • The 12 two-track schools are all near a station. The farthest is Anglo-Chinese School (Primary), 652m from a Newton exit. Between 8 and 21 stations reach each one within 5 stops (roughly a 10-minute train ride) with no change of train.
  • Living near an MRT doesn’t improve your odds. Phase 2C still ranks families by how far they live from the school. The train only changes which schools are close enough for the daily trip.

Stops and changes of train. The checker starts at up to 5 stops (roughly a 10-minute train ride) and up to 1 change of train. You can raise these with the buttons at the top, to 20 stops and 2 changes. For each school, it shows the route with the fewest stops within those settings. If a route with no change of train also fits, it’s shown underneath. The most it allows is 2 changes of train, because a daily trip to school with 3 or more changes isn’t practical for a six-year-old.

The distance and the walk. The distance is a straight line from the nearest MRT or LRT exit to the school’s address point. Real paths go round fences, roads and crossings, so the walk is shown as a range at adult pace. A six-year-old walks slower, and the gate may be nearer or farther than the address point.

Phase 2C. What happened to citizen families from 2022 to 2026. From a station, the result opens on the distance group of your station, not your home. Tap another group to switch, or check your home address on the P1 Phase 2C checker, which also measures in a straight line. From a school, it’s shown for all three distance groups. These are past results, and they don’t guarantee a place in 2027.

What got me thinking about this

A Straits Times report on the new Phase 2C rules listed how far each of the 12 two-track schools is from an MRT station, and said families in Bayshore could reach Tao Nan School in three or four stops. That got me thinking. From 2027, for the places for families more than 2km away at those schools, a family 3km away and a family 15km away have the same chance. So for those places, the only thing distance still decides is how long the trip to school takes. And the train doesn’t care about 2km. Then somehow it’s 2am.

A school near an exit isn’t automatically an easy trip. The walk from your home to your own station counts too, and so does the number of changes of train. Use the table below to filter and sort every school by walk, zone or town.

Which schools took every citizen family who applied?

At 88 schools, every citizen family who applied in Phase 2C got a place, every year from 2022 to 2026. Phase 2C puts families within 1km first, then 1 to 2km, then more than 2km, but at these schools that order never mattered, because there was room for every citizen. 45 of them are within 500m of an MRT or LRT exit. To see them, turn on “Every citizen who applied got a place, 2022 to 2026” in the table of all 182 schools.

Two of the 88, CHIJ (Katong) and Ngee Ann, become two-track schools from 2027, so their past record is a weaker guide.

These are past results, and they don’t guarantee a place in 2027. A school with room for every citizen one year can run out of places the next. The 2027 change adds up to 20 more Phase 2C places at schools with 180 or more Primary 1 places, but nobody knows yet how many families will apply.

How easy are the 12 two-track schools to reach by train?

From the 2027 exercise, these 12 schools split Phase 2C into two groups of at least 30 places. One group is for families within 2km, the other for families more than 2km away, anywhere in Singapore. Inside each group, distance gives no priority. MOE picked them because public housing makes up less than 40% of the homes within 2km of each school.

All 12 are within 652m of an MRT exit. Tap a school to see its record and the stations that reach it.

In 2026, before the change, citizen families more than 2km away got a place at 3 of the 12: CHIJ (Katong), Ngee Ann and Raffles Girls’ Primary. They had to ballot at Anglo-Chinese School (Primary). At the other 8, every Phase 2C place went to families living closer. Anglo-Chinese School (Primary) moves to Tengah in 2030, and MOE has said it leaves the two-track scheme then.

Does living near an MRT improve your Phase 2C odds?

No. Every school outside the 12 still ranks Phase 2C families by distance, with citizens before permanent residents. A family next to an MRT station 8km away is still in the more-than-2km group. The train helps only where that group got places, or, from 2027, in the places for families more than 2km away at the two-track schools.

If your child got the place because of where you live, MOE requires your child to live at the address you registered with for at least 30 months, usually counted from the start of the registration exercise (later if you registered with a home you haven’t moved into yet). Moving to another address, even one the same distance away, can mean MOE transfers your child to another school of its choosing. That includes a family that rents a flat near an MRT station and registers with it.

What is the trip to school like at 7am?

Stops on a map leave out the morning itself. There’s a six-year-old with a school bag, a walk at both ends, and a parent who still has to get to work afterwards. Trains heading away from the city in the morning are usually quieter. But many trips to the 12 two-track schools head towards town, because most of those schools sit between the housing estates and the city. This page has no crowding data, so it doesn’t rank routes by how packed they are. It’s worth doing the trip once at school hours before deciding anything.

Questions people ask about this

The corgi in glasses, chin on paw, with question marks above its head

Does living near an MRT station improve my child’s chances in Phase 2C?

No. Phase 2C ranks citizen families by how far they live from the school: within 1km first, then 1 to 2km, then more than 2km. Living near a station changes none of that. What it can change is which schools are close enough for the daily trip. Distance doesn’t decide who gets in at schools where every family who applied got a place, or, from 2027, in the places for families more than 2km away at the 12 two-track schools.

What changes at Phase 2C from 2027?

From the 2027 exercise, for children starting Primary 1 in 2028, schools with 180 or more Primary 1 places set aside at least 60 Phase 2C places instead of 40. At 12 schools, Phase 2C splits into two groups of at least 30 places: one for families within 2km and one for families more than 2km away, with no distance priority inside each group. Families who registered in 2026 were on the old rules.

Can permanent residents get one of the places for families more than 2km away at a two-track school?

Only if citizens don’t take them all. Take the places for families more than 2km away at a two-track school. Citizens are offered those places first. A permanent resident gets one only if fewer citizens apply than there are places. The same goes for the places for families within 2km. The results on this page are for Singapore citizen families.

Do I have to live at the address I register with?

Yes, if your child got the place because of where you live. MOE requires your child to live at the address you registered with for at least 30 months, usually counted from the start of the registration exercise (later if you registered with a home you haven’t moved into yet). Moving to another address, even one the same distance away, can mean MOE transfers your child to another school of its choosing. That includes a family that rents a flat near an MRT station and registers with it. Check the current terms on MOE’s P1 registration pages before you move or sign a lease.

How are stops and changes of train counted?

One stop is one station travelled, so Stevens to Newton is 1 stop. Changes of train are counted separately, and the walk inside an interchange isn’t counted. LRT stops and the change from an LRT to the MRT count the same way. The checker starts at 5 stops and up to 1 change of train, and you can raise it to 20 stops and 2 changes.

Why are the distances here longer than in some news reports?

This page measures a straight line from the school’s address point to the nearest MRT or LRT exit. The address point sits somewhere inside the school grounds, so the walk to the school gate may be shorter. Some reports measure to the school boundary: they put Singapore Chinese Girls’ Primary at 0m from Stevens, where this page has 195m. The walking time is an estimate at adult pace, shown as a range because real paths are longer than a straight line.

Why can’t I get routes from Bedok South, Sungei Bedok or Xilin?

These three stations are due to open in the second half of 2026 and weren’t running when this page was built. LTA’s station exit data doesn’t include them yet, so the page can’t measure walks or count stops from them. If you pick one, the checker offers the nearest open station instead. They’ll be added once they open, with a dated note in the update log.

How the stops and distances were worked out
  • Stations and exits. LTA’s MRT and LRT station exit data, last updated July 2026: 613 exits at 185 stations. Some exits are labelled with a station code instead of a name in that data, such as CC30 for Keppel; each was matched to its station by code.
  • Which station a school uses. The one whose exit is nearest the school’s address point. Another station may suit your trip better, so check the map as well.
  • Distance and walk. A straight line from the exit to the school’s address point. The walk is a range: that distance × 1.2 and × 1.5, at 80m a minute, a typical adult pace, each rounded to the nearest minute. Real paths go round fences, roads and crossings, so they’re longer than a straight line.
  • Stops. One stop is one station travelled, so Stevens to Newton is 1 stop. Changes of train are counted separately, and the walk inside an interchange isn’t counted. The checker starts at 5 stops and up to 1 change; you can go up to 20 stops and 2 changes.
  • Lines. The network as of September 2026, including Circle Line Stage 6 (Keppel, Cantonment and Prince Edward Road, opened 12 July 2026). The Circle Line is counted as one line all the way round, including the stretch through Promenade, Bayfront and Marina Bay; depending on the train, a trip along it may need a change the page doesn’t count. The Changi Airport branch, each LRT and each LRT loop count as their own lines. The Jurong Region Line and Cross Island Line will add routes when they open.
  • Stations not open yet. Bedok South, Sungei Bedok and Xilin appear in the station search but aren’t routed. Picking one offers the nearest open station: Bayshore for Bedok South, Expo for Xilin, and either for Sungei Bedok.
  • Your distance group. From a station, the result opens on the group worked out from the straight line between your station’s nearest exit and the school: within 1km, 1 to 2km, or more than 2km. Your home’s group can be different. Tap another group to switch.
  • Phase 2C results. The same 2022 to 2026 results as the P1 Phase 2C checker. Where every family in a group got a place and filled the school exactly, with 0 families balloting for 0 places, that group is shown as getting a place. The data has ballot counts only for 2024 and 2025, so in 2022, 2023 and 2026 an exact fill can’t be told apart from a ballot. For families more than 2km away, this could affect one school: White Sands Primary School, in 2022 and 2023.
  • Zones and towns. MOE’s four school zones (North, South, East, West) and the town in each school’s MOE record.
  • Schools without all five years. Damai Primary School, Kranji Primary School and Townsville Primary School have no Phase 2C in 2026 in the data, and stay in the finder with that label. Pioneer Primary School’s results start in 2025. A dash means that year isn’t in the data. None of the four counts towards the 88 schools.
Update log
  • 1 October 2026 — Phase 2C results now cover 2022 to 2026, the same five years as the P1 Phase 2C checker. The schools where every citizen family who applied got a place went from 100 (2025 and 2026) to 88 (every year from 2022 to 2026). Distances now come first, with the walk as a range. From a station, each school’s result can be switched to another distance group. From a school, the search box suggests schools as you type, the table sorts by any column, a school’s details open under its row, and picking a zone limits the towns to that zone. The two-track table now shows each school’s 2026 result, with a link to check them from your own station. Bedok South, Sungei Bedok and Xilin are still not open.
  • 1 October 2026 — Find by school now shows school cards for your search or filters. The full list moved to its own section, “All 182 primary schools”, with its own filters and sorting. The two-track table sorts by any column. From a station, one line above the results now links to the P1 Phase 2C checker for your home address, and a filter limits schools by their distance from their nearest exit. Both search boxes have a clear button. New illustration.
  • 1 October 2026 — Soft launch: the page is now open to everyone. The table of all 182 schools tags affiliated schools, and school cards name the affiliated secondary school. On phones, the table’s last column is now “Distance”, with a shorter walk time.
  • 29 September 2026 — Added Find by school, with filters for zone, town, walk, SAP, MOE Kindergarten, affiliation and past Phase 2C results. Phase 2C results now show as coloured tags. The checker opens at 5 stops and up to 1 change of train, and can sort by shortest walk. The two-track table switches between 5, 8 and 10 stops. Unopened stations now offer the nearest open one.
  • 29 September 2026 — Published. Waiting on Bedok South, Sungei Bedok and Xilin, due to open in the second half of 2026.

Where the numbers come from

More from Geek Out: Primary schools near my home: what’s their Phase 2C ballot history, and what changes in 2027?

Before you act on any of this. This page lays out MOE’s published Phase 2C results next to the MRT and LRT network. It isn’t a recommendation of which school to choose, or a reason to move home. Distances are straight lines and walking times are estimates, so check the trip yourself, and check your address on OneMap’s School Query. I refresh the numbers each year once MOE publishes the new results.
